The Benin eVisa system has simplified what was once a confusing, embassy-dependent process. You apply online, upload your documents, pay the fee, and receive an electronic authorization before you travel. At the airport or border, the immigration officer pulls up your record and stamps you in. The system works, most of the time. Here is everything you need to know to make it work for you.
This guide covers the application process, costs by nationality, processing times, and what to expect at Cadjehoun Airport and every major land border. It is updated for 2026.
Who needs a visa
ECOWAS passport holders from the 15 West African member states enter Benin visa-free. You receive a 90-day entry stamp on arrival at no cost. Bring your ECOWAS passport or national ID card valid for travel within the region.
All other nationalities require an eVisa obtained online before travel. This includes US, Canadian, UK, European Union, Brazilian, Chinese, Indian, and all other non-ECOWAS passport holders. Benin does not issue visas on arrival at Cadjehoun Airport. If you arrive without an approved eVisa, you may be refused boarding by your airline or denied entry at the border.
My Afro Origins program participants who have obtained Beninese citizenship through documented ancestry do not need a visa. They enter on their Beninese passport. The citizenship process is separate from the eVisa system and is covered in the Benin citizenship guide.
The online application: step by step
The official Benin eVisa portal is managed by the Direction de l'Immigration et de l'Emigration. The application takes 15-20 minutes. Have your documents ready before you start.
What you need
- A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended entry date
- A digital passport photo (JPEG or PNG, white background, recent)
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate (you will upload a scan or photo)
- A credit or debit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard)
- Your travel itinerary (flight details or intended border crossing point)
- Accommodation details (hotel name and address in Benin, or the address of your host)
The process
Step 1: Create an account. Go to the official eVisa portal. Enter your email address and create a password. You will receive a confirmation email; click the link to verify your account.
Step 2: Select your visa type. For tourism, select "Short Stay Visa" or "Tourist Visa." The options include 30-day single entry, 30-day multiple entry, 90-day single entry, and 90-day multiple entry. Choose the one that matches your plans. The 30-day single entry is sufficient for most Ouidah visitors.
Step 3: Fill in your details. Enter your personal information exactly as it appears in your passport. Name, date of birth, passport number, issue and expiry dates, nationality. Any discrepancy between the application and your passport will cause problems at the border.
Step 4: Upload documents. Upload your passport photo, a scan of your passport bio page, and your yellow fever certificate. The system accepts JPEG, PNG, and PDF formats. File sizes are typically capped at 500 KB per document.
Step 5: Provide travel information. Enter your intended date of entry, your point of entry (Cadjehoun Airport, Seme-Krake border, Hillacondji border, or Malanville border), and your accommodation address in Benin. If you are staying in multiple places, enter the first one.
Step 6: Pay the fee. The system displays the fee based on your nationality and visa type. Pay with a credit or debit card. The payment is processed immediately. You will receive a payment confirmation by email.
Step 7: Wait for approval. Standard processing takes 72 hours, meaning you should receive a response within three business days. Expedited processing is available for an additional fee and takes 24-48 hours. You will receive an email with your eVisa authorization letter when approved. Print it. Carry it with your passport.
If your application is rejected
Rejections are uncommon but they happen. The most common reasons are incomplete documentation, a passport photo that does not meet specifications, or discrepancies in the information provided. The rejection email will indicate the reason. You can reapply immediately with corrected documents. The fee is not refunded.
Costs by nationality
eVisa costs vary by nationality and are set by bilateral agreements between Benin and each country. The following are approximate ranges for a 30-day single-entry tourist eVisa in 2026. The exact fee is displayed during the application process.
| Nationality | 30-Day Single Entry | Notes | |---|---|---| | United States | $70-100 | | | United Kingdom | $70-90 | | | European Union | $60-90 | Varies by country | | Canada | $70-100 | | | Brazil | $50-70 | Lower fee under bilateral agreement | | China | $60-90 | | | India | $50-70 | | | ECOWAS countries | Free | Visa-free entry | | My Afro Origins citizens | Free | Beninese passport |
Multiple-entry visas and 90-day visas cost more, typically 50-100% above the single-entry fee. Expedited processing adds $30-50 regardless of nationality.
At the airport: Cadjehoun Airport, Cotonou
When you land at Cadjehoun Airport, proceed to the immigration desks. Have your passport, printed eVisa authorization, and yellow fever certificate ready. The immigration officer will verify your eVisa in the system, stamp your passport, and welcome you to Benin. The process takes 5-15 minutes depending on the queue.
If you did not print your eVisa, have the authorization email accessible on your phone. Printed is better; phone batteries die and screens crack. Immigration officers are accustomed to electronic verification, but paper removes friction.
After immigration, collect your luggage and pass through customs. Declare high-value electronics or equipment if asked. Standard tourist belongings do not require declaration.
At the land borders
The same eVisa works at all land borders. The process differs slightly from the airport.
Seme-Krake (Nigeria-Benin). The busiest land crossing. Present your eVisa at the Beninese immigration post. Processing is typically 10-20 minutes. ECOWAS passport holders receive a 90-day stamp on entry. The border is open during daylight hours.
Hillacondji (Togo-Benin). Less busy, faster processing. Present your eVisa at the Beninese immigration post. This is the border you will cross if traveling overland from Accra through Lomé.
Malanville (Niger-Benin). The northern crossing. Security concerns in the Sahel region mean this border may have additional checks. Check your government's travel advisory before planning a crossing from Niger.
In all cases, carry your printed eVisa, passport, and yellow fever certificate. Border posts in Benin are organized and functional, but patience is necessary during peak periods and holidays.
Extending your stay
A 30-day eVisa can be extended in Cotonou at the Direction de l'Immigration et de l'Emigration. The extension process requires an in-person visit, your passport, a passport photo, and a fee of approximately 20,000-30,000 CFA. Processing takes 1-3 business days. Extensions are typically granted for an additional 30 days. Do not overstay; fines and departure complications are the consequences.
Special cases
ECOWAS passport holders do not need an eVisa. You receive a 90-day stamp on arrival. If you plan to stay longer, visit the immigration office in Cotonou before your 90 days expire.
My Afro Origins citizens enter on a Beninese passport and face no visa requirements. If you have obtained citizenship through the program, carry your Beninese passport alongside your original passport.
Children traveling on a parent's passport require their own eVisa if they are listed as a dependent on the passport. Check the eVisa portal for specific requirements for minors.
Journalists, researchers, and NGO workers may require a different visa category. Contact the nearest Beninese embassy or consulate before applying online.
Troubleshooting
The eVisa portal is not loading. The official portal occasionally experiences downtime. Try again in a few hours. If the issue persists for more than a day, contact the Benin embassy in your country.
I have not received my approval email. Check your spam folder. If 72 hours have passed with no response, log into the eVisa portal with your account credentials and check your application status. If it still shows "processing," contact the portal's support email.
My eVisa has a mistake in my name or passport number. Contact the eVisa support team immediately. Do not travel with incorrect details. Corrections can sometimes be made before approval. After approval, a new application is usually required.
My airline will not let me board without a visa. Show them your eVisa authorization letter. The letter is your proof of authorization to enter Benin. If the airline staff is unfamiliar with Benin's eVisa system, ask for a supervisor. Most airlines serving West Africa are familiar with the process.
The OuidahOrigins concierge can advise on visa questions and help coordinate with local contacts for long-stay visitors. The concierge does not process visa applications directly; use the official eVisa portal for all applications.
